The electoral college is based on the US census, taken every 10 years. Each state is awarded a certain number of electors. When primary elections start, citizens of the state vote and the corresponding number of electors go to each candidate. The states with the biggest electoral college are California with 53, Texas with 36, and New York and Florida with 27.
